So your parents have given you a name that you despise. Or perhaps you are a couple about to marry and would like to have double barrelled names.
Let us take Twinkletoes who would like to change her name to Amanda. She may well be referred to as Amanda by all her friends but if she is wanting to change her bank accounts into her new name or change her passport she will need to have some documentary evidence of the change.
If Twinkletoes wants her name changed on public record this can be done by a formal application to the courts. This can be a costly and time consuming process. A simpler approach is to prepare a Change of Name Deed. This is a one page document stating her old name and her wish to change to the new name. A much simpler and cheaper method.
In the case of a child a Change of Name Deed must be completed by the parents. In the case of a separated couple this can be done by one parent but I would advise that the other parent agrees to what is being done.
